Once your enrolment in Greenhills Primary is accepted, you will be invited to take part in an extensive prep transition process, aimed at getting preps and their families to feel comfortable and informed about the day-to-day life at Greenhills.
There are several prep transition activities that take place before the school year begins. These include an information session, orientation and meet the teacher session.
In October each year, the school hosts an information session for prospective prep families. The information session covers topics including school readiness, uniforms, out-of-hours school care and helpful tips for first time preppies. There are also plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Each future prep is offered the opportunity to attend several orientation sessions to experience various aspects of life at Greenhills.
Orientation sessions are about 90 minutes long, and offer preps the opportunity to spend time in the regular classroom environment, as well as in specialist classrooms (art, music, Italian, etc.)
Booking forms are sent out to enrolled prep families when times and dates for the orientation sessions are finalised.
Finally, in December, there is a meet the teacher session where future preps are introduced to their teacher and meet their classmates.
Start of school year
All preps in Victoria have a staggered start to the school year.
The first five days of the school year are devoted to one-on-one 50-minute assessment with the prep teachers. This involves a 40-minute literacy assessment and a 10-minute meeting with the parents or guardians, to answer questions and discuss any areas of concern. Times and dates for each child's assessment are communicated to the families well in advance.
Once the assessments are completed, preps are split into two groups, with each group attending one of two full school days. The start and finish times on each day are staggered, to offer each student some one-on-one time with their teacher on their first full day of school.
Following the two staggered start days, preps began attending as a full class and on the same schedule as the rest of the school.
Prep families are provided with detailed and extensive information about life at Greenhills, including a parent handbook that covers topics such as getting ready for school, supporting your child's learning at home and communication channels between home and school.
All Greenhills preps participate in a School Buddies program.
As part of the program, each prep is matched with a senior student, who becomes their 'buddy' for the rest of the school year.
Initially, senior buddies orient the preps around the school, help them make new friends, answer questions and generally make the junior buddies feel safe and happy when outside their classroom.
Throughout the school year, the buddies have various touchpoints and work together on different school activities.
